Holidays Take Many Forms – 12.19.11

At this time of year there are many different types of celebrations. Religious, Cultural, Social, Traditional, Modern, maybe even Futuristic. There are parades & parties, feasting & shopping, singing & even some praying.

Whatever you believe in is of your own serious, personal choosing.

Think about it for a minute..what are the themes: Peace on Earth. Goodwill. Warmth of the Season. May the Festival Lights Shine Upon You. Food & Drink. Be Merry & Kind.To Give & To Receive.   I’m sure you can think of many others.

3 Days Off The Grid, But We’re Baack -12.6.11

Hi Everybody:

Well it’s been a trying couple of days recently. Eagle Rock, part of Los Angeles was treated to some amazing winds early last Thursday morning. It knocked out the power to thousands of households. Ours was restored late Saturday afternoon. 3 days and nights doesn’t sound like all that long, but trust me..a thing like that can get on your nerves.

Now I realize this was in no way a major event.  There was no looting in the streets or civil unrest..but it ‘s just not something we see in this part of the state. And if I may hazard a guess – most of us were not prepared.

For those of  you reading this in other parts of the United States & elsewhere –  this is probably the time for you to enjoy a hearty laugh. Temperate, Sunny, Southern California however is not used to Mother Nature dealing so deliberately with her.

60, 80,125 MPH winds were clocked in various parts of the County…and all of it in the dark!

Fortunately, we had heat, the gas utilities was not affected. So at night ChazzTheDog & I snuggled together to keep warm and to keep our spirits up.

From my room with a window that faces the street; I could see a light show like none I’d ever seen before. Snap Crackle Pop went the electric wires. I could hear the transformer on the pole across the street powering up & powering down – over and over and over. Sparks flew and wires eventually snapped.  Trees fell down. Think, “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore” type stuff. Yeah, it was pretty crazy.

I want to take this moment to thank the hundreds of men & women, the crews from the Department of Water & Power who worked around the clock to restore power to thousands of customers. I heard on the radio today there are still somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 who don’t have power at their homes. Yuck!

Everything is getting back to normal around here. The wind lifted the umbrella out of the patio table and flung it across the backyard but fortunately no damage resulted. Chazz The Dog’s tent was separated and the top blew into the neighbor’s yard. I mentioned to her that I had lost it and would she mind checking her yard for it at some point?  The top reappeared a couple of hours later & I was appreciative. Lots of leaves & debris, a refridgerator’s worth of spoiled food. In the final analysis we were very lucky.

Well, I just wanted to catch you up on what happened to us. No computer, no Blog, no Twitter, no Facebook.

It’s interesting to realize how much we do in and around computers & technology…all of which still depends on ELECTRICITY.

I know we won’t be taking power for granted, not for a long while, or at least until the next bill comes due.
